Volleyball: Norwich Claims Two in Home Tri-Match

NORTHFIELD, Vt.—The Norwich University volleyball team picked up two wins on Saturday afternoon, downing Albertus Magnus College by a score of 3-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action and then recording a 3-1 win against Newbury College in non-conference play later in the afternoon.  In the middle game, Newbury nabbed a 3-0 non-conference win against Albertus Magnus. 

With today's action, Norwich now sits at 4-2 overall and 1-0 in GNAC play.  Albertus Magnus falls to 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in GNAC standings, while Newbury now sits at 4-5 overall.

In the opener, Norwich won all three games against Albertus Magnus by scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-17. The Cadets were led offensively by Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) and Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.), who both totaled a team-high eight kills.  Gabrielle Miller (Grove City, Ohio) totaled a match-high 26 assists for the Cadets. 

Maritza Rosemond totaled a match-high 18 digs for Albertus Magnus, while Nicole Accera totaled 15 digs.  Krista LaBissoniere totaled 12 kills.  Melissa Manning recorded four kills for the Falcons.

The Cadets totaled a .119 hitting percentage against Albertus Magnus and held the visitors to a negative hitting percentage.

In the middle game, Newbury claimed the win with scores of 25-23, 25-10 and 25-15. The Nighthawks connected on 32.7 percent of attack attempts and totaled 39 kills as a team while limiting the Albertus Magnus offense to just 16 kills.

The Nighthawks were led by Syndey Fish with a match-high 18 kills and two blocks. Jessy Touron finished second on the Newbury squad offensively with nine kills.  Sara Hanna recorded a team-high 20 digs, while Sarah Young dished out 31 assists.

Albertus Magnus was led by LaBissoniere with five kills and nine digs.

In the nightcap, Norwich won the first two games by scores of 25-17 and 25-23 before Newbury rebounded to win game three 25-21, but Norwich won the final set 26-24 to clinch the 3-1 win.

Norwich was led by Palmer, who totaled a team-high 10 kills and 13 digs.  Miller dished out 26 assists in the second match for the Cadets. Jeannette Chartrand (Postenkill, N.Y.) totaled 10 kills for Norwich.

Leading the way for the Nighthawks was Fish, who again posted a match-high 18 kills.  Hanna totaled 12 kills, while Young dished out 36 assists. 

Norwich registered kills on 34 percent of all attack attempts in the final match of the day and held the Nighthawks to a .161 attack percentage. 

Norwich returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Lasell College for a 7:00 p.m. league matchup.
