Box Score 2 HOLDEN, Mass. – Norwich University junior outfielder Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran) picked up his 100th career hit, fittingly a double, in the fourth inning of game one of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Anna Maria College. AMC swept the twin bill by scores of 12-2 and 11-3.
Shimkus collected his benchmark hit when he connected with a Justin Hyland pitch and drove it to right-center to lead off the Norwich (4-26, 1-9 GNAC) half of the fourth inning. He would add two more doubles in the second game to increase his season total to 16, more than half of his 29 hits on the year.
Hyland (4-1) earned the win on the mound for the AMCATS (17-11, 8-2 GNAC), scattering four hits over six innings while allowing only two unearned runs. He registered six strikeouts and walked a lone batter. Carlos Ortiz went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored to guide the Anna Maria offense.
Shimkus led the Norwich bats in the opener, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Jeff Scafidi went 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead AMC to the victory in the nightcap. Scafidi also drew a walk in reaching base all four times he was up. Lucas Davis (2-2) went four innings to collect the victory, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out three and walking two.
Shimkus wrapped up his historic day for the Cadets with a 2-for-4 effort in game two, including the two doubles.
Norwich will welcome conference-leading St. Joseph's (Maine) to Garrity Field Wednesday, April 18 for a doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m.
