Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University and Albertus Magnus split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday, April 11, at Garrity Field. Norwich held on to win game one, 5-4, before Albertus came back to capture the nightcap by a 9-3 score.
Junior right fielder Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran) went 3-for-4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored to lead Norwich (4-22, 1-5 GNAC) offensively in the first game. Senior catcher Corey Shearer (Montague, Mass./Turner Falls) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Classmates Joe Sleeman (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) and Devin Robbins (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) also went 2-for-3, with Sleeman scoring twice and Robbins picking up a RBI.
Sophomore Devin Cilley (Tunbridge, Vt./South Royalton) picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season. The right-hander worked 3.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one and walking one. Senior Don DiBastiani (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) entered the game in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second and promptly retired the next two Falcon batters to earn his first save of the season.
Kyle Calechman led AMC (6-16, 3-5 GNAC) at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Matthew Finkenzeller (0-3) took the loss for Falcons.
Five different Albertus players had two hits in game two as the Falcons used three-run efforts in the second and fifth innings to gain control of the contest. Patrick Dornfried went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs while teammate Anthony Pellegrino was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Calechman reached base and scored three times in the nightcap.
Shimkus again paced the Norwich bats, going 2-for-3 with a home run over the leftfield fence to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Sleeman and freshman designated hitter Nicholas Gendron (Alstead, N.H./Vermont Academy) added two hits apiece for the Cadets.
Freshman Brandon Place (Concord, N.H./Concord) fell to 0-4 for NU with the loss. Brian Levchuk (3-3) earned the "W" for AMC.
Norwich travels to Nashua, N.H., for a crucial doubleheader with conference foe Rivier Saturday, April 14. Game one is set to get under way at 1 p.m.
