Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt.—All-Tournament selection John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) totald 26 points to lead the Babson College men's basketball team to a 60-56 win against the Cadets Norwich University in the championship game of the 2012 TDS Ed Hockenbury Classic.
With the win, the Beavers improve to 5-3 on the season, while the loss drops the Cadets to an even 3-3.
The Beavers capitalized on 44.4 percent shooting in the first half to take a 34-22 halftime lead. Babson led by as much as 16 in the final minutes of the half, but Norwich outscored Babson 6-2 in the final 3:14 of the half to cut the Babson lead to 12 entering halftime.
Norwich would open the second half firing, as with All-Tournament selection Josh Cabrera (Providence, R.I.) and Tom McDonald (Groton, Mass.) connected for back-to-back three-pointers in the opening minutes to cut Babson's lead in half 1:31 into the half.
McDonald would cut the lead one basket with another three and a foul shot, and the Cadets would tie the score at 40-40 on a jumper by Brandon Kuhre (Cornish, N.H.) with just over 13 minutes left to play.
Babson would not relinquish the lead and responded with a 7-0 run in the following two minutes.
A made free-throw by Wickey at the 4:23 would give the Beavers their biggest lead of the half at 56-48, but Norwich outscored Babson 8-2 in the next three minutes to cut the lead to two points at 58-56 on the strength of back-to-back three-pointers by Cabrera and a jumper by McDonald.
Forced to foul to regain possession, Norwich sent Babson forward Peter Foley (Wells, Maine), who connected on both free-throws to solidify the four-point victory.
Cabrera connected on 6-8 of his attempts from the floor and shot 3-4 from three-point range to lead the Cadets offense with a team-high 15 points. McDonald contributed 11 points for Norwich. Evan Tullar (Chelsea, Vt.) added nine points and four blocks for the Cadets.
Wickey scored a game-high 26 points for Babson and also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to notch the double-double. Matt Palazini (Franklin, Mass.) added eight points for the Beavers, while All-Tournament MVP Kenny Ross (Furlong, Penn.) dished out a game-high eight assists.
Norwich returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 6 when it opens Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on the road. The Cadets will travel to face Suffolk at 6:00 p.m.
