Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt.—The fourth-seeded Cadets of Norwich University advanced on penalty kicks in the opening round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer tournament. After a 0-0 final against Johnson & Wales (R.I.), the Cadets connected on all five of their penalty kicks to advance to the semifinal round.
Neither team would capitalize in the first half as the score remained 0-0 at halftime. Norwich totaled seven shots with two on goal and Johnson & Wales recorded eight shots, three of which were on goal. The Cadets had a strong opportunity to score in the first half when Garrett Shufelt (Clifton Park, N.Y.) beat the Johnson & Wales goaltender, but his shot on the open net trickled just wide of the net.
After a scoreless second half, Norwich would record the only two shots on goal in the first overtime, but both would result in saves for Wildcats goalkeeper Austin ScoggenIn the second overtime, Johnson & Wales would total two shots on goal to Norwich's one.
Scoggen totaled eight saves in net for the Widcats, while Norwich goalkeeper Greg Payne (State College, Pa.) posted 11 saves in net.
Mike Ravenelle (Merrimack, N.H.), Wesley Keslin (Brossard, Quebec), Anthony Amell (Northfield, Vt.), Joe Young (McLean, Va.) and Chris Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) all connected on their penalty kick attempts. Johnson & Wales scored on their first two attempts, but the third attempt hit the right post and bounced wide.
Norwich advances to the semifinal round of the GNAC tournament. The Cadets will face top-seeded Lasell, who down Mt. Ida 1-0. The game will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 30 with game time to be announced later.
