Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's soccer team scored first in Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference match against Albertus Magnus. However, the visiting Falcons scored the next five goals on their way to a 5-1 win over the Cadets on Homecoming Weekend at Howard Field.
Sophomore Anthony Amell headed home a corner kick service from freshman Chris Bristol in the eighth minute to put the Cadets on top 1-0 early.
NU (4-7-0, 2-3-0 GNAC) continued to control the play for the next 10 minutes but couldn't put another ball past Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Donato Piroscafo.
In the 21st minute Albertus Magnus (8-2-0, 5-0-0 GNAC) finally cracked through to level the score at one when junior Stephen Zapata scored from 30 yards out along the side line, beating NU goalkeeper Alex Toomey over his head and to the right upper corner of the net.
Six minutes later Richard Mitchell gave the Falcons the lead for good by heading home a free kick from Zapata to make it 2-1.
Albertus Magnus wasn't done yet though as Patrick Kenefick scored the Falcons' third goal in a 10-minute span after he capitalized on Toomey stumbling trying to recover after making an initial save.
Norwich scored an own goal in the 52nd minute when Mitchell sent a crossing pass into the penalty area that deflected off an NU defender and past goalkeeper Greg Payne who took over for Toomey late in the first half.
Jamal Howard capped the scoring for Albertus Magnus by tipping home a corner kick from Zapata to make it 5-1 Falcons in the 80th minute.
Piroscafo made two saves to pick up the win for AMC, while Toomey took the loss after given up three goals and making two saves. Payne surrendered two goals in 55:49 of action and made one save.
Albertus Magnus outshot Norwich 13-12. NU had eight corner kicks to the Falcons' seven.
Norwich will look to get back on track Tuesday when the Cadets host Lasell at 4 p.m. at Howard Field in another GNAC contest.
