Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich women's ice hockey
team completed the weekend sweep of St. Michael's by shutting
out the Purple Knights, 6-0, on Cadets Skate For The Cure Night
2011 at Kreitzberg Arena on Saturday night.
Norwich (12-3-1, 9-0-1 ECAC East) was led by senior team-captain
Sophie Leclerc, who had two goals and one assist
to push her season total up to a nation-leading 30 points.
Leclerc started the scoring just like she did on Friday night by
tipping a shot from the point from Amanda Wilks
past St. Michael's goaltender Erin Stevens
to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead with her 14th goal of the
season at the 6:15 mark.
Despite outshooting St. Michael's 17-2, as well as hemming
the Purple Knights (2-14-1, 1-8-1 ECAC East) into their defensive
zone for nearly all of the period, Norwich went into the first
intermission only up 1-0.
Jillayne DeBus extended the lead to 2-0 at the
6:16 mark of the second period when she poked a loose puck over the
goal line after Stevens blocked Wilks' initial shot from the
blue line.
Caitie Banfield finished the scoring for the
period when she blasted a shot that found its way through traffic
and into the back of the net to make it 3-0 Norwich at the 14:38
mark of the second period.
Sarianne Lynn kept the Norwich momentum rolling
with her third goal of the season at the 4:46 mark of the third
period to stretch the lead to 4-0 with an assist from
Brittany Sharman.
Sharman and Lynn combined again for the next Norwich goal just
21 seconds later. This time it was Sharman who scored the goal,
which was the first of her collegiate career with an assist from
Lynn.
Leclerc capped the scoring with her 15th tally of the
season with an assist from Lynn at the 11:24 mark of the third
period.
Norwich freshman goaltender Joanie Plamondon
earned her first career shutout in the Maroon and Gold by turning
aside five shots to pick up her second win of the season and
improve to 2-1-1.
Stevens was saddled with the loss for St. Michael's after
stopping 54 shots. She dropped to 1-7-1 on the year.
Norwich outshot St. Michael's 60-5 and was 1-for-6 on the
power play. St. Michael's was 0-for-4.
A season-high crowd of 569 witnessed the two in-state rivals
play for the SD Ireland Cancer Research Fund. Norwich wore
special-edition pink jerseys for the second consecutive year.
Norwich returns to action next Friday when the Cadets travel to
New England College, looking to extend their unbeaten streak to six
straight games. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m. Norwich will then follow
up with Castleton on Saturday night with faceoff set for 7 p.m. at
Spartan Arena. Both games are ECAC East contests.
