NEWTON, Mass. – Mollie Fitzpatrick
tallied a game-high five goals to lead the Norwich University
women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 victory over Mount Ida
College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest
Saturday afternoon.
Danielle Del Dotto added one goal and a game-high three assists
for the Cadets (3-4, 3-1 GNAC). Kacey Abbriano chipped in one goal
and one assist for NU.
Jen Thompson scored a team-high four goals to lead Mount Ida
(4-3, 1-2 GNAC).
The Mustangs tallied the first two markers of the game, but four
straight goals by the Cadets gave Norwich a 4-2 lead midway through
the opening half. The teams traded goals over the final five
minutes of the stanza, and the Cadets took a 5-3 advantage into
halftime.
Thompson netted a pair of goals to begin the second half and tie
the score at 5-5. Norwich responded with four unanswered goals to
take control of the game and open up a 9-5 lead. Fitzpatrick scored
three of the Cadets' goals during the spurt, which seemed to
put Norwich in full control.
Mount Ida bounced back with three straight goals, though, to
pull to within 9-8 late in the contest. Thompson scored twice
during the run, which put the Mustangs right back in the game.
Suzanne Whitaker scored off an assist from Del Dotto in the
final minute of regulation, and Norwich was able to hold on for the
victory.
NU goalkeeper Kellie Pickel made 11 saves for the Cadets in the
victory. Mount Ida goalie Devyn Frank stopped 11 shots in the loss
for the Mustangs.
Norwich held a 21-19 edge in shots, while Mount Ida enjoyed a
26-17 advantage in ground balls.
The Cadets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 6, when they
travel to Westfield, Mass., to battle Westfield State College in a
non-conference contest. The opening draw for the game is slated for
4 p.m.
