WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Norwich
University softball team was swept by St. Joseph College (Conn.) in
a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Friday
afternoon. The Blue Jays picked up a 7-6 eight-inning victory in
the first game, before securing a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
St. Joseph improves to 8-7 (3-3 GNAC), while Norwich falls to
1-9 (0-2 GNAC). The Cadets have now lost four one-run games this
season.
Emily Hummel earned two pitching victories and had the
game-winning hit in both games for the Blue Jays.
Hummel pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief in the first
game, and went the distance in game two. Her bloop single over the
pitchers' mound with two out in the bottom of the eighth
inning scored Stephanie Valerio with the winning run in game one.
In the sixth inning of game two, her single through the left side
scored Melanie Bush to cap a two-run rally and break a 3-3 tie.
Norwich's Marley Balasco, who went 2-for-4 in the first
game, rapped an RBI single in the second inning and ripped an RBI
double in the third to help the Cadets to leads of 3-0 and 5-2
before Saint Joseph rallied with four sixth-inning runs. Norwich
battled back to tied the score at 6-6 on a seventh-inning RBI
single from Caitlin Wohlschlegel. Wohlschlegel led Norwich at the
plate in the opener, going 3-for-4.
Norwich jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings in game
two, before St. Joseph rallied two runs in the fourth and two more
in the fifth to secure the victory. Balasco went 3-for-4 to pace
the Cadets offensively in the night cap.
Norwich will continue its GNAC schedule on Saturday, March 27,
when the Cadets travel to Boston to take on Emerson College in a
doubleheader. First pitch for the opening game is slated for 2:30
p.m.
