NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's
basketball team was victorious in their host tournament, the
14th Annual Ed Hockenbury Classic, as they defeated
Colby-Sawyer College, 71-60 on Saturday afternoon in Andrews
Hall.
Earlier in the afternoon, Johnson State College faced the
University of Maine – Augusta in the consolation round, as
the Badgers took a dominant 85-52 win over the Moose.
The Cadets, now 3-2 overall for the season, had four players in
double-digit territory for points with sophomore Ryan
Williams leading the pack. Williams recorded 19 points in
the game, while also making four boards, a steal, and earning
credit for three rebounds.
Senior Cori Boston added in 12 points and two
assists, while making four defensive rebounds and one steal. Junior
Antonio Davis recorded seven boards for the
Cadets, two assists and two steals, all while helping put 10
additional points on the scoreboard.
One rebound shy of a double-double, freshman Pim
Smulders made an impact in the championship round,
collecting 11 points and nine boards. He recorded one assist and
one steal and used his height to his advantage to make a team-best
four blocks on the Chargers.
For Colby Sawyer, freshman Robbie Burke achieved double-double
status in the game, as he went for 12 points and 13 boards. He also
was credited with two steals and two assists. His classmate, John
Roberts, also made an impact against the hosting Cadets by scoring
15 points, and splitting his six rebounds evenly on the offensive
and defensive side.
Sophomore Corey Willis led his team in assists with four, while
netting 13 points and three steals. Junior Will Bardaglio was the
fourth Charger to put up big numbers in the championship game,
tallying 11 points, one assist, and a team-best five steals.
In the consolation game earlier in the afternoon, Badgers'
sophomore Cody Camisa led with 19 points and seven rebounds, while
also contributing one assist and a steal.
Following up with 11, 12, and 13 points respectively for the
third-place Johnson State team was classmate Andy Bousono, junior
Brian Phelps, and senior Ian Passino.
The University of Maine – Augusta had three key players
who took the lead against the opposing Badgers. Freshman Lucas Paul
led the team with 13 points and tied for a team-best seven rebounds
with junior David Prior, who netted 12 points.
Junior Orlando Holmes also helped add to the scoreboard with an
additional 12 points, making six boards and earning an assist.
There will be no rest for the Cadets as they host Western
Connecticut State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday Norwich
will host Lasell in their first GNAC conference game of the season
at 1 p.m.
Sneaking in one more game before the winter break, the Cadets
will travel to Rivier on Sunday, Dec. 12 for their rescheduled game
from Dec. 1.
