NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Ray Askew dropped a
game-high 34 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, and
Jefferson Lora added 19 points to lead Albertus Magnus College past
Norwich University, 92-87, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) men's basketball game Saturday afternooon.
Walden St. Juste chipped in 13 points and Sha'Ron Young posted
10 points and a game-high six assists for the Falcons, who improve
to 6-3 (2-0 GNAC).
The loss spoiled another terrific performance by Norwich
sophomore F Antonio Davis, who put up a career-high 29 points and
ripped down a team-best 10 rebounds. It marks the third
double-double of the season for Davis, who also contributed a
game-high three steals.
Freshman G Ryan Williams added 16 points for the Cadets, while
senior F Israel Guardado had 12. Sophomore G Darell Marshall also
posted double-figures for NU, scoring 10 points.
Norwich (6-4, 1-2 GNAC) led 77-76 with 7:49 to play following a
lay-up by Williams. Albertus Magnus responded with a 7-0 run over
the next 2:41 to take a 83-77 advantage at the 5:08 mark. A
three-pointer by junior G Cori Boston and a pair of free throws by
Davis helped the Cadets creep to within one point (86-85) two
minutes later, but a three-point play by Askew stretched the
Falcons' lead back to four. Davis answered with a three-point play
of his own to draw NU to within 86-85 with 2:46 to remaining.
The teams traded baskets with St. Juste connecting for AMC and
junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat hitting for NU. A free throw by Byron
Reaves made it 89-87 with 41 seconds left, and the Cadets turned
the ball over on their ensuing possession. Albertus Magnus then
converted 3-of-4 free throws in the final 19 seconds to secure the
victory.
The game was tight throughout with a total of 12 ties and 16
lead changes. The teams went back and forth over the first five
minutes and the game was tied at 15-15 at the 14:56 mark. A pair of
three-pointers by St. Juste and a triple by Young helped spur a
10-0 run by AMC, which gave the hosts a 25-15 lead with 13:29 to
play in the half. The Falcons stretched their lead to 12 points
(32-20) at the 11:12 mark, but a 23-10 spurt by the Cadets gave the
visitors a 43-42 edge with 3:11 left before halftime. The game
see-sawed back and forth for the rest of the stanza, and the teams
went into the intermission with the score deadlocked at 48-all.
Davis led the Cadets with 14 points in the first half, while
Askew scored 17 for the Falcons.
The second half was closely contest throughout, with neither
team extending a lead to more than four points until the final
minutes.
Both teams shot extremely well from the field, with Norwich
hitting 47.2 percent (34-of-72) of its shots and Albertus Magnus
connecting on 52.4 percent (33-of-63) of its field goal attempts.
NU held a slim 42-39 edge on the glass.
Norwich will continue its GNAC slate on Tuesday, Jan. 12, when
they Cadets host St. Joseph's (Maine) at Andrews Hall at 7 p.m.
