Women's Ice Hockey: Norwich Blanks St. Michael's, 6-0

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team thoroughly outplayed the St. Michael's Purple Knights to earn a dominating 6-0 victory in ECAC East play Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.

The Cadets were led by sophomore F Julie Fortier and freshman F Jacqueline Perez, who each registered a goal and an assist. Senior F Sophie Leclerc added a goal to go along with two assists for the Cadets, who improve to 12-3-3 (10-2-2 ECAC East). Sophomore G Chiara Traversa was solid in between the pipes for the Cadets, turning away several quality chances to earn the shutout.

Fortier opened the scoring on a beautiful individual effort at the 6:10 mark of the opening frame to put the home team up 1-0. After corralling the puck from a scrum in the right corner, she skated to the net and lofted a shot over the glove of Saint Michael's G Erin Stevens and into the top corner. Leclerc and junior D Emily Goff were credited with assists on the play. Leclerc's assist was the 50th of her standout career.

The Cadets were able to add to their lead a little more than two minutes later when Fortier used a shot fake to pull Stevens out of her crease and then slid the puck across to Perez who placed it into the open net to run the score to 2-0. Leclerc pushed the advantage to 3-0 when she found the back of the cage off an assist from Perez at the 11:54 mark.

Sophomore D Amanda Wilks and junior F Ashley Cassan added goals for the Cadets in the second period. Cassan's marker was her first of the season. Danielle Del Dotto rounded out the evening's scoring when netted her first goal of the year midway through the third period.

Traversa stopped all 18 shots that she faced. Stevens finished the game with 26 saves for the Purple Knights.

For the game the Cadets outshot SMC 32-18.

Norwich will return to action on Friday, Feb. 5, when the Cadets travel to Newport, R.I., to face ECAC East rival Salve Regina at 7 p.m. The Cadets and Seahawks battled to a 4-4 tie three weeks ago.
