NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
women's ice hockey team thoroughly outplayed the St. Michael's
Purple Knights to earn a dominating 6-0 victory in ECAC East play
Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Cadets were led by sophomore F Julie Fortier and freshman F
Jacqueline Perez, who each registered a goal and an assist. Senior
F Sophie Leclerc added a goal to go along with two assists for the
Cadets, who improve to 12-3-3 (10-2-2 ECAC East). Sophomore G
Chiara Traversa was solid in between the pipes for the Cadets,
turning away several quality chances to earn the shutout.
Fortier opened the scoring on a beautiful individual effort at
the 6:10 mark of the opening frame to put the home team up 1-0.
After corralling the puck from a scrum in the right corner, she
skated to the net and lofted a shot over the glove of Saint
Michael's G Erin Stevens and into the top corner. Leclerc and
junior D Emily Goff were credited with assists on the play.
Leclerc's assist was the 50th of her standout career.
The Cadets were able to add to their lead a little more than two
minutes later when Fortier used a shot fake to pull Stevens out of
her crease and then slid the puck across to Perez who placed it
into the open net to run the score to 2-0. Leclerc pushed the
advantage to 3-0 when she found the back of the cage off an assist
from Perez at the 11:54 mark.
Sophomore D Amanda Wilks and junior F Ashley Cassan added goals
for the Cadets in the second period. Cassan's marker was her first
of the season. Danielle Del Dotto rounded out the evening's scoring
when netted her first goal of the year midway through the third
period.
Traversa stopped all 18 shots that she faced. Stevens finished
the game with 26 saves for the Purple Knights.
For the game the Cadets outshot SMC 32-18.
Norwich will return to action on Friday, Feb. 5, when the Cadets
travel to Newport, R.I., to face ECAC East rival Salve Regina at 7
p.m. The Cadets and Seahawks battled to a 4-4 tie three weeks ago.
