NASHUA, N.H. - Sophomore F Antonio Davis posted
a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to help
the Norwich University men's basketball team outlast Rivier, 75-74,
in overtime Thursday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) contest played at the Muldoon Center.
Freshman G Ryan Williams knocked down five three-pointers and
dropped 19 points off the bench for the Cadets, who overcame a
nine-point second half deficit to earn the victory. Junior G Cori
Boston added 18 points and nine rebounds, while junior G/F Jaren
Jeffcoat chipped in nine points and 10 assists. Freshman G Nickolai
Havoutis dished out a game-high six assists for NU.
Norwich (11-6, 6-4 GNAC) ended the second half on a 12-4 run to
turn a 65-57 deficit at the 6:46 mark into a 69-69 tie after
regulation time expired.
The Cadets scored the first three points of the overtime, but a
three-pointer by Nick Bean knotted the score at 72-all with 2:14
remaining. Three free throws by Norwich gave the visitors a 75-72
advantage with 17 seconds remaining, but a driving lay-up by Will
Snider made it 75-74 moments later. The Raiders then stole the
ensuing inbounds pass, but they missed two potential game-winning
three-pointers in the final six seconds and Norwich was able to
escape with the win.
Rivier jumped all over Norwich to start the game, taking an 11-2
lead less than four minutes into the first half. Seven straight
points by the Cadets closed the gap to 11-9, but five unanswered
points by the Raiders made it 16-9 at the 11:29 mark. NU responded
with a 15-6 run over the next six minutes to take its first lead of
the game (24-22) with 5:52 remaining before halftime. Rivier closed
the half on a 15-6 run of its own to carry a 37-30 lead into the
intermission.
Brian Troy led Rivier in the first half with 12 points, hitting
four three-pointers. Williams paced the Cadets with nine points in
the opening stanza.
Norwich began the second half on a 9-3 spurt to trim Rivier's
lead to one point (40-39) less than four minutes into the frame.
The Raiders responded with a 10-2 spurt to extend their lead to
nine points (50-41) with 13:50 to play. A three-pointer by Bean
capped the run, and whipped the Rivier crowd into a frenzy. Rivier
was able to keep its lead in excess of four points for the next
seven minutes until Norwich's game-ending run.
Don Poitras led Rivier (4-13, 1-9 GNAC) with a team-high 18
points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Luke Brownell and Troy both
finished with 12 points for the Raiders, while Bean added 11.
Norwich was able to win despite shooting just 33.3 percent
(26-of-78) from the field. Rivier, meanwhile, hit only 39.1 percent
(27-of-69) of its shots from the floor. The Cadets outrebounded the
Raiders, 49-44. The rebounding edge helped NU outscore Rivier,
22-6, in second-chance points.
Norwich will conclude its brief two-game road trip on Saturday,
Jan. 30, when the Cadets travel to Newton, Mass., to battle GNAC
rival Mount Ida College. The Mustangs won the first meeting between
the schools earlier this month when they scored an 86-78 victory in
Northfield.
