NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Chris Rivet's unassisted goal
in the 80th minute helped the Norwich University men's soccer team
salvage a 1-1 tie versus in-state rival Castleton State College
Tuesday afternoon at a rainy and cool Howard Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans (5-3-1) opened the
scoring in the 52nd minute when Chris Mulholland settled a loose
ball near the top of the box and blasted a shot into the top
right-hand corner of the net. The goal, which was Mulholland's
third of the season, gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Norwich (4-3-2) responded at the 79:46 mark when Rivet
controlled the ball on the right side of the box and fired a laser
of shot into the top left-hand corner of the cage to tie the score
at 1-1. It marked the third goal of the year for the senior
defender.
Norwich senior M Bobby Begin had a terrific scoring opportunity
near the end of the first overtime period, but his volley from 15
yards out rattled off the crossbar. The Cadets had three more shots
in the second overtime, but they were unable to convert.
Castleton goalkeeper Mike Anthony made seven saves for the
Spartans, while Norwich senior GK Charles Maxwell turned aside
three shots for the Cadets.
NU outshot CSC 17-11 in the game, and the Cadets held a 5-1 edge
in corner kicks. The game was physical throughout with 48 fouls
whistled in the contest. Two Cadets received yellow cards.
The Cadets continue their five-game homestand on Saturday, Oct.
3, when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe
Albertus Magnus State College in a league match. Kickoff from
Howard Field is set for 12 p.m.
