NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
volleyball team extended its win streak to eight straight matches
on Tuesday evening as the Cadets defeated in-state rival Green
Mountain College, 3-0, at Andrews Hall. Norwich won by game scores
of 25-17, 25-10 and 25-23.
The Cadets improve to 8-2 with the victory, while the Eagles
fall to 2-5.
The first game started out close with the score dead-locked at
7-7 in the early stages. Five straight points by the Cadets gave NU
a 12-7 lead, which quickly grew to 23-12 en route to the relatively
easy 25-17 win.
Norwich completely dominated the second set, jumping out to a
9-2 lead. Green Mountain trimmed the deficit to 11-7 moments later,
but a 10-2 spurt by the Cadets gave the hosts a commanding 21-9
advantage and they went onto the 25-10 verdict.
Green Mountain came out strong in the third frame with the
Eagles taking an 11-4 lead out of the gates. GMC eventually led
16-9 before an 11-4 run by the Cadets knotted the score at 20-20.
Green Mountain scored the next two points to take a 22-20 lead, but
Norwich finished the game on a 5-1 burst to secure the thrilling
25-23 victory and complete the sweep.
Junior Molly Rice led the way statistically, posting a
double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs. Fellow junior Thea Evans
chipped in seven kills and eight digs, while sophomore April
Byllaardt had five service aces and two blocks. Senior Lisset
Magdaleno and junior Dana Flieger each added 10 digs apiece for NU.
Norwich wraps up its four-game homestand on Thursday, Sept. 17,
when the Cadets host in-state foe Johnson State College at Andrews
Hall. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
