NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
softball team used a pair of late-inning rallies to sweep its Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader from St. Joseph
(Conn.) on Friday afternoon. The Cadets won the opener 8-6, before
taking a 4-3 eight-inning decision in the nightcap.
Norwich (14-16, 11-9 GNAC) looked to have game one in hand,
leading 6-2 as the contest moved to the seventh inning. St. Joseph
(Conn.) rallied to tie the game at 6-6 with four runs in the top of
the seventh. The Cadets came right back in the bottom of the
seventh as Jackie Donahue blasted a two-run walk-off home run to
give NU the dramatic victory.
Donahue finished the opener 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three
runs scored to lead the Cadets at the plate.
In the nightcap, Norwich trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth
before rallying behind Mackenzie Pratt's two-run double. Pratt,
Marley Balasco and Whitney Grennon each collected two hits apiece
to lead the Cadets' offensive attack.
Norwich will return to action on Saturday, April 18, when the
Cadets host GNAC opponent Mount Ida in a doubleheader beginning at
1 p.m.
