NEWTON, Mass. - Jose Guitan posted a
triple-double with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to
lead Lasell past Norwich, 67-59, in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) men's basketball tournament quarterfinal game
Tuesday evening.
Brad Caravoulias and Junior Sanival each added 12 points apiece
to help top-seeded Lasell (18-8) overcome a two-point halftime
deficit and survive a scare from eighth-seeded Norwich.
The Cadets (7-19) were led by Mike Filipek, who posted a
double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jaren Jeffcoat joined
Filipek in double-figures with 10 points. Robert Thurman, Tim Fico
and Darell Marshall each added eight points apiece for the Cadets.
It did not look good for Norwich early on as Lasell jumped out
to a 14-7 lead less than six minutes into the contest. An 8-4 spurt
by the Cadets pulled the visitors to within 18-15 at the 10:15
mark, but the Lasers extended their lead to 25-17 with a 7-2 run.
Norwich ended the opening stanza by outscoring Lasell 12-2 to take
a 29-27 lead into halftime. Filipek and Thurman combined to score
10 points during the run, which gave the Cadets their first lead
since the opening minutes.
Lasell began the second half on a 10-2 run to establish a 37-31
lead just two minutes into the frame. Norwich used an 8-4 spurt
over the next four minutes to battle to within two points at 41-39.
The Lasers scored the next 11 points to push in front 52-39 at the
11:40 mark, and it looked as though they were finally starting to
pull away. The resilient Cadets refused to quit, though, reeling
off a 16-3 run to pull to within 57-55 at the 5:18 mark.
The teams traded baskets and Lasell led 59-57 with 3:59 to play.
But a lay-up by Javon Williams and a three-pointer by Sanival
extended the Lasers' lead to 64-57 and the Cadets could not
recover.
Norwich shot 41.5 percent from the floor, while Lasell made just
35.6 percent of its field goals. The Cadets were 3-of-15 from
three-point range, while the Lasers connected on just 5-of-27 from
behind the arc. Norwich was just 2-of-3 from the free throw line,
while Lasell made 10-of-16 charity tosses. The Lasers held a 48-42
rebounding edge in the game. They also scored 26 points off 19
Norwich turnovers.
