NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Sophie Leclerc scored a goal
and assisted on two others to help lead the Norwich University
women's ice hockey team past St. Michael's College, 4-2, Saturday
afternoon in an ECAC East contest at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich (16-7-1, 14-5-1 ECAC East) opened the scoring early in
the first period when Amanda Wilks scored an unassisted goal at the
3:12 mark.
St. Michael's (6-16-3, 4-14-3 ECAC East) tied the game at 1-1
midway through the opening stanza when Desiree Biron took a drop
pass from Meghan Sweezey and beat NU goaltender Chiara Traversa
with a quick wrist shot.
The Cadets reclaimed the lead late in the first period when
Leclerc scored at the 19:13 mark. Leclerc's goal, her team-leading
15th of the season, was assisted by Wilks.
Norwich outshot St. Michael's 14-2 in the first period, and the
Cadets took their 2-1 lead into the middle frame.
NU outshot SMC 16-3 in the second period, but the Cadets could
not add to their lead and the score remained 2-1 after 40 minutes
of action.
Kelsey Cone scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just
39 seconds into the third period, netting her 13th marker of the
season off assists from Sarah Scardino and Leclerc.
St. Michael's pulled to within 3-2 at the 8:33 mark when Emily
Paquin scored on the power play. Sweezey was credited with an
assist on the goal, which was Paquin's third of the season.
The Cadets put the game away in the final minute when Scardino
scored off a feed from Leclerc at the 19:10 mark. It marked
Scardino's sixth goal of the year.
Traversa stopped 14 of the 16 shots she faced in the Norwich net
to earn the victory. Alysia Goldman made 37 saves in defeat for the
Purple Knights.
St. Michael's went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Norwich was
0-for-6 with the man advantage.
The Cadets have now won eight straight games, and are unbeaten
in their last 12 contests.
Norwich honored Becky Scully, the team's lone senior, with a
special ceremony prior to the game.
Norwich wraps up its regular season on Sunday, Feb. 22, when the
Cadets travel to Purchase, N.Y., to take on Manhattanville in an
ECAC East matchup. Faceoff is slated for 3 p.m.
