CASTLETON, Vt. - Second-seeded Castleton State
advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Division III New England
Men's Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 win over seventh-seeded Norwich
University Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium.
Castleton (11-7-3) wasted little time breaking through for
1-0 lead, as Jon Vogt notched his fourth goal of the season to
break the scoreless tie in the seventh minute of play. Greg Klopfer
took the first of Castleton's six first-half corners and sent it
into Vogt, who headed it past Norwich senior GK Charles Maxwell.
Vogt had another chance at a goal in the 26th minute of play,
striking a bending left-footer that appeared destined to make it
2-0, but Maxwell made a diving save to keep the one-goal deficit.
Norwich (10-8-2) evened the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute, on
a bizarre play inside the Castleton box. Castleton goalie Mike
Anthony came out to clear a 50-50 ball, and collided with a Norwich
attacker.
The ball squirted free of Anthony's grasp and was corralled by
freshman F Jake LeClaire. LeClaire sent a ball in towards the goal
mouth, and was redirected past three Spartan defenders by senior M
Bobby Begin for his team-best eighth goal of the season.
Castleton broke free for the final margin of victory 23 minutes
later on a Sean Fitzgerald marker. Billy Lund placed a perfect
through pass on the ground to Fitzgerald, who deposited it inside
the far post for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
The Spartans held an 18-9 advantage in shots, and a 7-1 edge in
shots on goal. Castleton also attempted 10 corner kicks to the
Cadets' two.
Maxwell stopped five shots in the loss.
