NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Freshman F Jake Leclaire
scored the game-winning goal midway through the first half, and
senior GK Charles Maxwell earned his second shutout of the season
as the Norwich University men's soccer team defeated in-state rival
Lyndon State College, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Howard Field.
Norwich (5-4-2) controlled the first half, but the Cadets were
unable to score until the 29th minute when freshman F Danny Hudson
crossed the ball from the right corner in front of the net. Senior
M Bobby Begin tapped the ball over to Leclaire, who beat Lyndon
State goalkeeper Ian Oliver for his second goal of the season.
NU outshot LSC, 15-4, in the first half, but the Cadets were not
able to add to their lead as Oliver made five first-half saves.
Norwich continued to have the better of play in the second half,
but neither team scored and the game ended 1-0.
Maxwell stopped both shots that he faced en route to his second
shutout of the season. Oliver finished with six saves for the
Hornets.
For the game, Norwich outshot Lyndon State 22-7. The Cadets
enjoyed a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Cadets will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Standish,
Maine, to battle St. Joseph's (Maine) at 3:30 p.m.
