CASTLETON, Vt. - Roger Motaze scored in
the 24th minute, and Charles Maxwell made four saves in the NU goal
to lead the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory
over Castleton State in the team's season opener Friday afternoon.
Both teams battled through 20 minutes of scoreless soccer, each
gaining scoring opportunities. With 27:30 remaining in the first
half, Chris Rivet launched a rocket from 22 yards out that
Castleton keeper, Mike Anthony saved to keep the game scoreless.
Castleton answered with a strong run just two minutes later, which
was thwarted by Norwich defender Jason Grupp.
Just nine seconds into the 24th minute, Motaze tallied what
proved to be the game winner. Rivet played a ball just passed the
Castleton defense that Motaze was able to redirect past a sprawling
Anthony.
The Cadets had a chance to score an insurance goal just one minute
later as Rob Harlow was left free inside the box, but Anthony made
a terrific point-blank save to keep the Spartans within striking
distance.
Castleton had its two best chances in the second half turned away
yet again, and Norwich held on for the victory. Just over six
minutes into the second half, Jerry DeChance sent a header
just wide of the far post, and with 27 minutes remaining Maxwell
made the last of his four-saves to earn the shut-out.
Norwich returns to action on next weekend (Sept. 6-7), when the
Cadets travel to North Adams, Mass., to take part in the MCLA
Tournament. NU squares off with UMass-Dartmouth on the first day of
competition, before facing Curry on day two.
