NEWTON, Mass. - Jose Guitan registered a
double-double with 25 points and 18 rebounds, and Brad Caravoulias
scored 20 points to lead Lasell past Norwich, 100-69, in a Great
Northeast Athletic Conference men's basketball game Tuesday
evening.
Kevin Fallon added 15 points, and Corey Godfrey chipped in 13
for the Lasers, who improve to 4-3 (2-0 GNAC).
Norwich (2-7, 0-2 GNAC) was paced by Joshua Cabrera, who scored
a career-high 20 points. Robert Thurman netted 16 points and a
team-high six rebounds, while Jaren Jeffcoat scored 13 and Mike
Filipek posted 11 points for the Cadets.
Norwich hung with Lasell in the first half, trailing the Lasers
54-47 at the intermission. Both teams shot exceptionally well in
the opening 20 minutes, with Lasell hitting 62.5 percent of its
shots, and Norwich connecting on 57.1 percent of its field goal
attempts.
Lasell's hot shooting continued in the second half, as the
Lasers drilled 52.6 percent in the frame. Norwich, though, cooled
off, as the Cadets only hit 30.8 percent of its field goals after
halftime.
The Lasers started the second stanza on a 12-5 run to take a
66-52 lead at the 16:13 mark. The Cadets fought back with five
unanswered points to trim their deficit down to nine points at
66-57 with 14:16 to play. But the Lasers put the game away with a
23-7 run that helped them open up an 89-64 advantage at the 6:06
mark. Lasell never let its lead dip below 23 points the rest of the
way, as the Lasers coasted to the 31-point victory.
For the game, Lasell made 40-of-70 field goals (57.1 percent),
while Norwich hit on 28-of-61 (45.9 percent). The Lasers were on
fire from behind the three-point line, knocking down 12-of-25
attempts from behind the arc. Norwich did its fair share of damage
from "downtown" as the Cadets hit 8-of-17 from three-point range.
Lasell outrebounded Norwich, 36-33, in the contest. The Cadets
turned the ball over 27 times, while the Lasers committed just 15
turnovers.
Norwich will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, when the
Cadets travel to Newton Centre, Mass., to take on GNAC rival Mount
Ida at 3 p.m.
