NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Andrew Cousins scored a
game-high 21 points, and Duncan Szeliga added 20 points to lead
Colby-Sawyer to a 74-58 victory over Norwich in the Ed Hockenbury
Classic title game Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.
David Rosso chipped in 12 points for the Chargers, who outscored
Norwich 39-22 in the second half en route to the victory.
Norwich (2-6) was led by Joshua Cabrera, who scored a
career-high 18 points in the loss. Jaren Jeffcoat and Kyle
McQuarrie each chipped in eight points apiece for the Cadets.
Colby-Sawyer used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to
turn a 51-49 lead at the 9:48 mark into a 63-49 advantage with 6:14
to play. Norwich got no closer than nine points the rest of the
way, as the Chargers made some clutch shots down the stretch to
hold off the Cadets.
The first half was a hotly-contested affair that featured seven
ties and eight lead changes. Norwich got off to a quick start,
racing to a 10-4 lead at the 16:16 mark. Colby-Sawyer fought back
with a 14-6 run to take an 18-16 lead midway through the first
half. The game went back and forth throughout the rest of the
stanza, with neither team leading by more than four points. Cabrera
hit a baseline jumper just before the first half expired to give
the Cadets a 36-35 lead at intermission.
Cabrera led the Cadets in the first half with 13 points. Norwich
shot well from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, converting 58.3
percent of its field goals. Colby-Sawyer was led by Szeliga, who
scored 11 first half points. Cousins added 10 in the first half for
the Chargers, who hit 40 percent from the field.
The first 10 minutes of the second half remained tight, until
CSC's game-deciding run.
Norwich shot just 30.4 percent from the floor in the second
half, while Colby-Sawyer hit 45.0 percent of its shots. The
Chargers held a 39-26 rebounding edge in the game. CSC enjoyed a
big advantage on the free throw line, converting 26-of-31 compared
to just 10-of-20 for NU.
Cabrera represented Norwich on the all-tournament team. Tyler
Herrington of St. Joseph's (Vt.), Maurice Horton of Worcester State
and Szeliga rounded out the all-tournament team. Colby-Sawyer's
Matt Lemieux was named the event's most valuable player.
Norwich will close out its first semester schedule on Tuesday,
Dec. 9, when the Cadets travel to Newton, Mass., to take on GNAC
rival Lasell at 6 p.m.
