NORTHFIELD Vt. - Jerrold Williams led four Cadets in double figures with 16 points, as the Norwich men's basketball team defeated Albertus Magnus, 73-63, in a GNAC contest played Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.

The victory, the team's third in its last four games, made Norwich head coach Paul Booth the winningest coach in the history of the NU program. With 183 career victories, the 15-year mentor passes the legendary Ed Hockenbury on the Cadets' list of all-time winningest coaches.

Mike Filipek, Derrick Montiero and Jamel Bedford each chipped in 11 points apiece for the Cadets, who improve to 7-6 (3-4 GNAC). Albertus Magnus (1-13, 1-7 GNAC) was paced by Sha'Ron Young, who collected a game-high 18 points. Bobby Leonzo added 12 points for the Falcons.

After rallying to take a one-point halftime lead, Norwich found itself trailing 41-37 with 12:46 to play in the second half following an 11-6 Albertus Magnus run to open the stanza. That is when the Cadets turned it on, outscoring the Falcons, 24-9, over the next eight minutes to assume a 61-50 advantage at the 4:38 mark. Cody Hatt hit a three-pointer to ignite the rally, and the senior connected on two more treys during the spurt, as NU opened its largest lead of the game.

The Cadets, who shot a blistering 59.1 percent in the second half, held the Falcons at bay for the remainder of the contest en route to the 10-point victory.

The first half was a back and forth affair that featured four ties and seven lead changes. Norwich took control in the early going, outscoring Albertus Magnus, 18-9, to begin the game. The Falcons came roaring back with a 14-1 run to take a 23-19 lead with 7:16 to play in the opening half. NU closed the frame on a 10-5 spurt, turning a 25-21 deficit into a 31-30 halftime edge.

Williams and Filipek led Norwich in the first half with eight points apiece.

Norwich concludes its brief two-game homestand on Monday, Jan. 21, when the Cadets host GNAC rival Daniel Webster at Andrews Hall for a 7 p.m. contest.
