KINGSTON, R.I. -
The Norwich women's ice hockey team saw its 15-game win steak
snapped in the ECWHL Championship game with a tough 4-1 loss to
Rhode Island at Brad Boss Arena. Rhode Island won despite being out
shot, 23-21.
Sophie Leclerc was a consistent offensive threat for NU as she
scored the lone goal in the first period with a top corner wrist
shot, assisted by Annie DiVito.
The Rams held a 2-1 lead after one period then added a power
play goal in the second period. The Cadets could not convert on a
5-3 man advantage or a Leclerc breakaway. URI added its third goal
on the power play as the Rams maintained a two-goal lead after two
periods. Norwich pressed in the third and out shot URI 8-7, but was
denied by Rams goaltender Lynn Pecci. URI added another goal to
seal the 4-1 victory. NU goalie Courtney Miniter had 17 saves in
the loss.
Leclerc was named to the ECWHL All-Tournament team on the
strength of her stellar play and four goals over the weekend.
The Cadets (17-6-1) will return to action against fourth-ranked
URI in less than two weeks at the ACHA National Tournament
which will be held at UMass-Amherst March 8-11.
