Steve Mattson enters his 25th season as an assistant coach for the men's hockey team in 2024-25.

Last season, Mattson helpedĀ the Cadets to the #2 seed in the NEHCĀ en route to earning his 100th-career victory in Norwich's regular-season finale victory over the University of Southern Maine.Ā  Five Cadets earned All-Conference nods, including Clark Kerner '25, Sami Molu '27, and Bryce Walcrius '27, landing on the All-NEHC Third Team, while Cooper Bertrand '27 and Owen Slisizzi '27 were also on the All-Rookie Team, alongside Walcarius.

Mattson graduated from Norwich University in 1977 after transferring from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

A native of Weston, Mass., Mattson holds a Master of Education degree from St. Michael's College. He assists head coach Dominick Dawes '04 in game planning and practice preparation. He also serves as the lead recruiter for Norwich hockey, spending considerable time on the road watching prospective student-athletes throughout the United States and Canada.

Before returning to Norwich, Mattson wasĀ the Director of Ice Hockey and assistant hockey coach at Saint Michael's. He helped direct the program to five ECAC tournament appearances in six years, winning the ECAC Central Division in 1996-97 and the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1998-99.

In 2014, Mattson won the prestigious Terry Flanagan Award, given annually by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) since 1997, which honors an assistant coach's career body of work. He was just the second Division III coach to win the award in the 18-year history, with the rest being Division I assistants.
