Michael Shewmaker was named Assistant Coach of the Norwich University men's basketball team prior to the 2017-18 season, Head Coach Paul Booth announced on Aug. 9, 2017. He'll enter his fourth season with the Cadets in 2020-21.

In three seasons, Shewmaker has helped develop a Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-League player and a 1,000 point scorer.

Shewmaker joined the Cadets from Castleton University where he assisted the Spartans men’s basketball team since June 2013. The squad racked up an impressive 46-26 record against North Atlantic Conference foes across that span. He was tasked with assisting the daily preparations of practices, on-court instruction, and individual workouts.

Earning No. 15 on the “Top 25 Small College Assistants” list published by CoachStat.net, Shewmaker has coached three First Team All-NAC selections, including the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2014-15. During his tenure, Castleton posted its first-ever victory over a nationally-ranked opponent, downing No. 9 WPI on Nov. 23, 2013.

Prior to his time at Castleton, Shewmaker was a volunteer graduate assistant at Fairleigh Dickinson University, an NCAA Division I institution, from September 2011 to February 2012. Assisting the Knights players with pre-season individual workouts, Shewmaker also aided the coaching staff with practices, film exchange and academic support.

Off the court, Shewmaker served as an Athletic Academic Advisor at Fairleigh Dickinson, meeting with student-athletes on a regular basis while assigning tutors, planning semester classes, and discussing academic opportunities while fostering positive relationships.

A 2011 graduate of Castleton with a degree in Sport Management, Shewmaker later earned his master’s degree in Sport Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson in 2013. He resides in Northfield, Vt. with his wife, Leah, his son, Tristan, and dog, Baxter.
