Patrick Madden enters his first season, in his second stint, as the assistant head coach for defense, defensive coordinator, and safeties coach for the football team in 2024.
Madden previously served on staff from 2019-2021 as the defensive backs coach. Madden helped oversee a secondary that led the NEWMAC, ranked just inside the top 50 in the country in passing yards allowed per game (179.6), and boasted a pair of All-Conference defensive backs in Brasean Stewart '20 and Michael Corinna '20. That pair helped lead the Cadets' secondary to five interceptions and 26 pass breakups. Stewart also garnered a spot on the d3football.com All-East Region Third Team.
In his time away from Norwich, Madden was the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Benedictine College (IL). Madden initially came to Norwich after serving as a coach at Elon University. He joined Rich Skrosky’s staff at Elon in January 2013 as the defensive line coach. He was promoted to defensive coordinator and linebackers coach following the 2015 season.
Elon’s veteran defensive line accounted for 15.0 of the team’s 23 total sacks in the 2015 season.
Following Elon’s first season as a member of CAA Football, Madden’s defensive line saw one of its members, Dustin Ruff, collect all-league accolades.
Madden spent the previous two seasons with the Jumbos of Tufts. During his time with that program, Madden served as the linebackers coach, special teams coordinator (2013), defensive line coach, and co-special teams coordinator (2012). In 2013, Tufts kickers rated fourth in the New England Small College Athletic Conference in kickoff yardage, averaging 58.7 yards per kick. That year, Madden coached Mike Rando to first-team all-league honors as a return specialist. In his first season with the program, the Jumbos ranked near the top of the league in kickoff return average, punt return average, and punting average.
Before joining the staff at Tufts, Madden spent the 2011 campaign as the defensive coordinator at Lawrence Academy. He has also made coaching stops with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League, the University of New Hampshire, Boston College, Columbia University, and Wesleyan University. During Madden’s time at Boston College as a graduate assistant, the Eagles won back-to-back ACC Atlantic Division crowns after graduating from Wesleyan in 1999.
