CHICOPEE, Mass. — The Norwich University men's soccer team secured a 1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Elms College on Saturday morning at Leary Field, using a first-half goal from sophomore defender Miles Bergeson (Charlotte, Vt.) and a strong defensive effort to earn the road win.
Norwich came out of the gates aggressively, creating several scoring opportunities during the opening stages of the match. The Cadets generated four shots in the first eight minutes, including attempts from Alessandro D'Arena (Berlin, Conn.), Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Gabriel Cantarero (Annapolis, Md.) and Brian Baek (Fairfax, Va.).
Norwich continued to apply pressure through its attack and earned a series of corners in the opening 15 minutes. Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) delivered three corner kicks between the eighth and 15th minutes before the Cadets finally broke through.
In the 16th minute, Fuentes sent another ball into the box, setting up Bergeson for the game's opening goal.
The Cadets continued to control possession following the opening goal, creating additional chances through the remainder of the first half. Baek forced an Elms save in the 25th minute, while Jacob Paro (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tested the opposing goalkeeper late in the half.
Norwich entered halftime with a 1-0 advantage after outshooting Elms, 8-3, during the opening 45 minutes.
The second half saw Elms push forward in search of the equalizer, but the Norwich back line remained organized and disciplined. Victor Kalorin (Raleigh, N.C.) continued to anchor the Cadets in goal, making three saves in the second half to preserve the shutout.
Norwich continued to create opportunities of its own after the break. Rubenstein had a shot blocked early in the half, while Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.) and Bergeson also tested the Elms defense.
Norwich nearly added to its advantage in the 60th minute when Bergeson put another shot on frame, but the Blazers goalkeeper made the save. The Cadets continued to defend their one-goal cushion as Elms increased its pressure during the final stages.
The Blazers generated several opportunities late in the match, but Norwich's defense held firm and prevented the equalizer. Kalorin came up with another save in the closing minutes before the Cadets closed out the 1-0 victory.
The Cadets finished the match with a 14-9 advantage in shots and placed five attempts on frame.
Bergeson led Norwich with three shots, including two on goal, while Baek added two shots.
Kalorin turned in a five-save performance to earn the shutout and help Norwich secure the GNAC road victory.
The Cadets return to action next week when Colby Sawyer comes to town on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
