Men's Lacrosse: Fleury erupts for career-high nine points as Cadets outlast Dean in GNAC clash

FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team picked up a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory on Saturday afternoon, holding off several Dean College pushes to earn a 21-14 road win on Grant Field.

The Cadets turned in one of their strongest offensive performances of the spring, placing 36 shots on goal and receiving major contributions throughout the lineup in a game with important conference implications.

Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.) delivered a career-best showing to lead the Norwich attack, piling up nine points on six goals and three assists.  Jake Marcotte (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) followed with five points on two goals and three assists, while Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.) tallied four goals.

Jackson Forbes (Merrimack, N.H.) added three points on two goals and an assist, and Case MacDonald (Burke, Va.) recorded a hat trick.  Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.) chipped in a pair of goals, while David Gosselin (South Burlington, Vt.) contributed two assists.  Nicholas Wolfgang (New Port Richey, Fla.) finished with a goal and an assist, Robbie McAllister (Amherst, Mass.) scored once, and Liam O'Neill (Hingham, Mass.) added an assist.

Norwich came out flying and seized immediate control with a 5-0 run over the opening nine minutes.  MacDonald struck twice in the first 101 seconds, Marcotte followed with an unassisted goal, and Rainis and Fleury each added tallies to put the Cadets firmly in front.

Dean responded with three straight goals late in the opening quarter to cut into the deficit, but Forbes answered with 52 seconds remaining in the frame to give Norwich a 6-3 edge after one.

The Cadets added to that cushion early in the second quarter behind back-to-back goals from Fleury, the first off a Marcotte feed and the second unassisted.  Though Dean continued to battle and trimmed the margin on multiple occasions, Norwich kept finding answers.

Forbes scored again midway through the quarter, Fleury added his third and fourth goals of the half, and Rainis found the net with 4:08 remaining as the Cadets carried a 12-9 lead into halftime.

Norwich created more separation coming out of the break.  Rainis opened the third-quarter scoring off a Marcotte assist, and after Dean answered once, MacDonald and Johnston delivered consecutive unassisted goals to push the margin back to five at 15-10.

Rainis kept the surge going early in the fourth off an O'Neill helper, and Wolfgang followed with a goal off another Marcotte assist to hand Norwich its largest lead of the afternoon at 17-10.

Dean refused to go quietly, however, rattling off four of the next six goals to stay within striking distance.  Norwich answered each time the Bulldogs threatened.  McAllister finished a feed from Gosselin, Marcotte scored off a Fleury assist, Johnston added his second of the day, and Fleury capped his standout performance with the Cadets' final goal with 2:06 remaining.

Norwich held the edge in several important categories, including a 51-40 advantage in shots, a 36-26 margin in shots on goal, and a 45-35 lead in ground balls.  The Cadets also protected possession well, committing just 14 turnovers compared to Dean's 21, while finishing 20-for-24 on clear attempts and limiting the Bulldogs to a 12-for-16 mark.

Fleury led Norwich with eight ground balls, while Marcotte, David Myers (Hainesport, N.J.), and Ryan Magararu (Newtonville, Mass.) each collected five.  Magararu was also a key factor at the faceoff X, going 15-for-31.

Defensively, the Cadets generated seven caused turnovers, with seven different players recording one apiece.

Mason Dils (Watervliet, N.Y.) earned his seventh win of the season in goal, making 12 saves across 60 minutes of work while also picking up three ground balls.

Norwich will return home for its regular season finale on Monday, Apr. 20, hosting Colby-Sawyer College in a GNAC matchup at 4:00 p.m. The Cadets will then turn their attention to the GNAC Tournament, with quarterfinal action set to begin on Saturday, Apr. 25.
