NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team added another entry to its record-setting spring on Wednesday afternoon, edging Vermont State University Castleton, 4-3, in a tightly contested non-conference matchup at the Castleton Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Cadets improved to 12-1 overall, extending both the strongest start in program history and their current winning streak to nine matches. The victory also marked Norwich's fourth straight over the Spartans.
Norwich built its foundation in doubles play, claiming two of the three courts to secure the opening point. VTSU Castleton struck first at No. 2 doubles, where Charles Watson and Trevor Castino defeated
Ethan Teluk (Manlius, N.Y.) and
Reynard Gan (Chandler, Ariz.), 6-3.
The Cadets answered quickly at the top flight, as
Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and
Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) turned in a strong 6-2 win over Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard at No. 1. The doubles point was decided on the third court, where
Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and
Juan Gonzalez Torres (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) delivered a 6-3 victory against Tyler Burke and Addy Boynton.
That early edge proved decisive once singles play began.
Redmond wasted little time extending the Norwich lead, producing a flawless 6-0, 6-0 result over Ciufo at No. 1 singles. Redmond committed just three unforced errors over the entire match, marking one of the cleanest individual performances in program history.
Gan followed with another steady showing at No. 6, defeating Jackson Paquin, 6-2, 6-2, to push Norwich within a point of the team victory.
VTSU Castleton responded through the middle of the lineup, as Watson topped Hartigan, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 to put the Spartans on the board. Bayly-Henshaw then supplied the clinching point for Norwich, handling Maynard in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles to secure the overall result.
The Spartans claimed the final two matches of the day, with Castino defeating Gonzalez Torres, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 and Burke outlasting Teluk in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 5, but the Cadets' work in doubles and top-end singles had already done enough to lock up the 4-3 victory.
