VERO BEACH, Fla. — The Norwich baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon against Elizabethtown as the Cadets continued their Spring Break trip in Vero Beach. The Blue Jays entered the day receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 national poll.
Game 1 – Elizabethtown 9, Norwich 8
Elizabethtown struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening inning, but Norwich answered in the second.
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) reached with a two-out single before
Kyle Tanis (Shelburne, Vt.) and
Jack Medhurst (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) followed with back-to-back infield hits, with Medhurst's knock bringing Ohlsen home to tie the game.
The Cadets seized momentum in the third inning, erupting for five runs on five hits.
Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.) opened the frame with a single, stole second, and scored on a
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) triple.
Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.) followed with an RBI single before
Trevor Lussier (Lyndonville, Vt.) doubled to put two runners in scoring position with no outs.
After a pitch hit, Ohlsen loaded the bases, and Tanis lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Sabasteanski. Medhurst then capped the rally with a two-run single, giving Norwich a 6-1 lead.
Norwich added two more runs in the fourth inning. Maldonado reached on an error and worked his way around the bases, including another stolen base, before scoring on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Lussier launched a solo home run to center field to stretch the Cadet lead to 8-3.
Elizabethtown chipped away with a run in the fourth before staging a dramatic rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs to walk off with the victory.
Maldonado finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Lussier went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two runs scored. Medhurst drove in three runs while swiping two bases.
Game 2 – Elizabethtown 12, Norwich 3
The Blue Jays carried their momentum into the nightcap, building a 5-0 lead through the middle of the third inning.
Norwich responded in the bottom half of the frame. Ohlsen opened the inning with a single, and Medhurst drew a walk before a pitch hit Maldonado to load the bases. Ohlsen scored on a wild pitch, Medhurst crossed the plate on an error, and
Trevor Lussier drove in Maldonado with an RBI double to make it a two-run game.
Elizabethtown answered with another offensive surge in the later innings to pull away and secure the doubleheader sweep.
Ohlsen finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Lussier added an RBI double. Out of the bullpen,
Adam Gwarjanski (Minot, Maine) tossed two scoreless innings and struck out three.
Norwich wraps up its Florida trip Friday morning with a 10 a.m. matchup against Northwestern (Minn.) in Vero Beach.
