Softball: DeCota Dominates in the Circle as Cadets Split Twin Bill with Mariners

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Norwich University softball team returned to action for the first time since its Spring Break trip on March 6, opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by splitting a doubleheader with Mitchell on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Norwich 1, Mitchell 0
The Cadets edged out a tightly contested pitcher's duel in the opener, with Madison DeCota (Strafford, N.H.) delivering a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 victory.
Both teams were held in check throughout, as DeCota and Mitchell's Olivia DeCicco matched each other inning for inning. DeCicco worked out of early trouble in the first before settling in, while DeCota stranded runners in key moments, including striking out two batters to escape a threat in the fifth inning.

Norwich broke through in the sixth inning for the game's only run. Charlii Carbajal Sanchez (Broomfield, Colo.) reached on an error to lead off the frame, followed by a DeCota single. Courtney Thomas (Strafford, N.H.) then beat out an infield single to load the bases before Ellie Laroche (Essex, Vt.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Carbajal Sanchez for the decisive run.

DeCota shut the door in the seventh to secure the win, finishing with seven innings of five-hit shutout ball, allowing just one walk while striking out four.
Thomas led Norwich at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Carbajal Sanchez added a hit, a run scored, and a triple.

Game 2: Mitchell 5, Norwich 1
The nightcap began as another low-scoring affair before Mitchell broke through with a five-run fourth inning to take control.
Norwich answered in the fifth inning. Abbigale Williams (Andover, Vt.) sparked the rally with a leadoff double and later came around to score on a one-out RBI single by Jessica Zalucki (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), cutting into the deficit.

The Cadets threatened to build momentum, but the Mariners held firm to secure the split.

Williams, Thomas, and DeCota each recorded doubles for Norwich in the game.

Norwich returns to GNAC action on Saturday, March 28, traveling to Rivier for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
