NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's basketball team set a season-high in scoring behind a dazzling offensive showcase on Tuesday night, rolling to a 98-52 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play inside Andrews Hall.
Five different Cadets reached double figures, led by a 26-point outburst from
Joe Joe DuBrul (Shelburne, Vt.), who buried a career-best eight three-pointers on 16 attempts.Â
Michel Ndayishimiye (Colchester, Vt.) turned in a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double, adding five assists, while
Mike Johnson-Correia (Mattapan, Mass.) chipped in 13 points, including three made triples.
Jordan Ricketts (Stratford, Conn.) and
Nate McNeff (Stratham, N.H.) rounded out the scoring surge with 11 points each, as McNeff notched a career-high on a perfect 4-4 shooting line in just 10 minutes off the bench.
After empty possessions to start the game, Ndayishimiye got the Cadets rolling with an old-fashioned three-point play, followed by a Ricketts free throw to give Norwich a quick 4-0 lead. Colby-Sawyer kept pace early, briefly narrowing the margin to 7-6, but baskets from Ndayishimiye, DuBrul, and Johnson-Correia sparked a 39-13 explosion over the next 17 minutes. Norwich took its largest first-half lead at 46-19 with just over a minute to play.
The Chargers managed a tip-in before the break to send the teams into halftime with Norwich on top, 46-21.
The Cadets' offense was electric in the opening stanza, converting at a 44.1% clip from the floor, including seven three-pointers, while the defense was stifling, holding the Chargers to just 21.2% shooting and 0-14 from deep.
Colby-Sawyer found brief momentum to open the second half, trimming the deficit to 23, but the Cadets quickly reasserted control, outscoring the Chargers, 52-31, after the break. Norwich's lead swelled to 50 on a McNeff layup from
Coley Fundalewicz (Prescott, Ariz.) with 1:41 remaining, putting the exclamation mark on the program's most lopsided win of the season.
Norwich shot a blistering 65.6% in the second half, matching their first-half total with seven more threes, and finished the night at 54.5% from the field.
The Cadets dominated every phase, posting advantages in points in the paint (44-20), bench points (34-8), fast break points (21-4), points off turnovers (12-5), and second-chance points (16-8). Norwich also crushed the glass, outrebounding Colby-Sawyer, 55-29.
With five games left in the regular season, the Cadets now hit the road for a pair of GNAC matchups, beginning with a 3:00 p.m. contest at Mitchell College on Saturday, Feb. 7. Norwich will then travel to New England College on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in a rematch of the Nov. 18 meeting won by the Pilgrims.
