Men's Basketball: Cadets drain 19 threes in Senior Day rout over Blazers, secure #8 seed in GNAC Tournament

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's basketball team delivered its most explosive offensive performance of the season on Saturday afternoon, raining in 19 three-pointers en route to a commanding 95-57 Senior Day victory over Elms College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season finale inside Andrews Hall.

With the win, the Cadets secured the #8 seed in next week's GNAC Tournament and will travel to top-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday, Feb. 25, for a 7:00 p.m. showdown.  Norwich will look to avenge a regular season overtime loss to the Monks on Jan. 17, an 89-84 decision in Andrews Hall.

Four Cadets reached double figures, led by the senior duo of Joe Joe DuBrul (Shelburne, Vt.) and Michel Ndayishimiye (Colchester, Vt.).  DuBrul buried five triples on his way to 24 points, while Ndayishimiye added 23 points, connecting on 4-8 attempts from beyond the arc.  Charles Nogard (Arlington, Mass.) knocked down four three-pointers in just 17 minutes to finish with 14 points, and Jordan Ricketts (Stratford, Conn.) contributed 13 points and a game-high six assists.

Both teams took time to settle into rhythm early, with DuBrul striking first from deep 98 seconds into the contest.  Elms answered three minutes later and kept the margin within five at 13-8 as Norwich's offense began to find its footing.  A Ndayishimiye triple sparked an 11-0 run midway through the opening half, stretching the lead to 16 and igniting a barrage from long range.

The Blazers briefly trimmed the deficit to 12, but the Cadets responded with another emphatic surge.  A 19-3 run over five minutes, punctuated by five three-pointers and capped by a DuBrul triple, extended a 27-15 edge to 28.  Ricketts later drilled a three-pointer to push the first-half lead to 29 before Elms countered with consecutive layups.  Ndayishimiye closed the half in fitting fashion, knocking down a deep three in the final seconds to send Norwich into the locker room ahead 55-27.

DuBrul opened the second half with yet another triple, pushing the lead beyond 30 and igniting an 11-3 burst that culminated in a soaring dunk off a steal in transition.  The Cadets continued to pour it on, building a 40-point advantage midway through the stanza following a Riley Severy (Barre, Vt.) layup.

With the outcome firmly in hand, Norwich's bench maintained the intensity, closing the final two minutes on a 4-0 run behind baskets from Quinn Twombly (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Coley Fundalewicz (Prescott, Ariz.) to cap the 38-point triumph.

Norwich held advantages in second chance points (15-9), fast break points (27-17), and bench scoring (21-16).  The Cadets shot 44.1 percent from the floor and delivered a blistering 19-39 (48.7%) performance from three-point range, while converting 16-19 attempts at the free-throw line.

Prior to tip-off, Norwich honored DuBrul and Ndayishimiye as part of Senior Day festivities.

The victory secures Norwich's third straight appearance in the GNAC Tournament.  Wednesday's winner between the Monks and Cadets will advance to face the winner of #4 Lasell University and #5 Emmanuel College on Friday at the site of the highest remaining seed.
