PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A dramatic season-opening victory over a nationally ranked opponent has produced three Little East Conference (LEC) weekly award recipients for the Norwich University men's ice hockey team, as senior forward Boyd Stahlbaum (Peterborough, Ont.), senior defenseman Cooper Bertrand (Caledon, Ont.), and freshman forward Jake Kavanagh (Kirkland, Quebec) were recognized by the league office on Monday.
Stahlbaum was named LEC Forward of the Week, Bertrand earned Defender of the Week honors, and Kavanagh collected Rookie of the Week recognition after all three played central roles in No. 10 Norwich's 7-6 overtime victory over No. 9 University of New England on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
The trio helped Norwich open the 2026-27 campaign with its first victory over UNE since 2019, as the Cadets survived a late Nor'easter rally before Bertrand supplied the game-winner 2:34 into sudden-death overtime.
Stahlbaum directed much of Norwich's offensive production throughout the evening, recording a game-high four assists while helping the Cadets generate seven goals against a nationally ranked opponent.
Three of those helpers came on Norwich's first three power-play opportunities. Stahlbaum assisted on Frank D'Ancona (Fort Myers, Fla.)'s first-period equalizer, Ocean Fancy (Orleans, Mass.)'s go-ahead tally later in the opening frame, and D'Ancona's second goal early in the second period as Norwich converted each of its first three chances with the man advantage.
The senior added his fourth assist in the third period, helping set up Kavanagh's first collegiate goal at 11:25 to give Norwich its largest lead of the night at 6-4.
Stahlbaum also contributed away from the scoresheet, finishing with two blocked shots while helping Norwich secure the season-opening victory.
The weekly honor is the first of Stahlbaum's collegiate career.
Bertrand delivered at both ends of the ice in his season debut, finishing with two goals, one assist, and two blocked shots.
The senior captain picked up an assist on Norwich's opening power-play goal before scoring his first goal of the season midway through the second period. After UNE tied the contest at 3-3, Bertrand needed only 13 seconds to restore the Cadets' advantage, finishing a feed from Kavanagh and Sammy Crane (Aurora, Ill.) to make it 4-3.
His biggest contributions came after regulation.
With the teams deadlocked at 6-6, Bertrand blocked a UNE opportunity just 34 seconds into three-on-three overtime. Two minutes later, Kavanagh helped create Norwich's decisive chance, finding Bertrand as he joined the rush before the senior buried the game-winning goal at 2:34.
The Defender of the Week selection marks Bertrand's second career weekly conference honor and his first since Norwich joined the Little East. He previously earned New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Player of the Week recognition on Feb. 17, 2025.
Kavanagh made an immediate impression in his collegiate debut, recording one goal and two assists while finishing with a team-best plus-4 rating.
The freshman earned his first career point on Bertrand's second-period goal before scoring one of his own midway through the third. With Norwich leading 5-4, Kavanagh found the back of the net at 11:25 to push the advantage to two.
He then helped write the final chapter in overtime, setting up Bertrand's game-winning strike for his third point of the evening.
Kavanagh also made his presence felt in the faceoff circle, winning nine of 13 draws for a 69.2-percent success rate while adding a blocked shot.
The Rookie of the Week award is the first weekly conference honor of Kavanagh's collegiate career.
The recognition arrives in Norwich's second season as a member of the Little East Conference, which began sponsoring men's and women's ice hockey in 2025-26.
Norwich will now turn its attention to LEC play, opening a two-game road swing on Friday, Nov. 6, at Plymouth State University at 5:00 p.m. before traveling to New England College on Saturday, Nov. 7, for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
