NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Norwich University men's soccer team punched its ticket to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Semifinals for the second consecutive season, defeating Albertus Magnus College in a dramatic 7-6 penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes of action in Saturday's GNAC Quarterfinal matchup at Celentano Field.
The Cadets (9-5-4) demonstrated resilience throughout the postseason contest, overcoming an early deficit before prevailing in the decisive shootout to secure their place in the GNAC Semifinals.
Albertus Magnus struck first in the opening half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. Norwich battled to find an equalizer before halftime, recording three shots in the opening period as the hosts carried their one-goal advantage into the break.
Norwich responded in the second half, leveling the contest in the 63rd minute. Cristian Habiniak (North Branford, Conn.) finished his opportunity off a feed from Daniel Hennessey (Dubai, U.A.E.), bringing the Cadets even at 1-1 and shifting the momentum in Norwich's favor.
Both sides continued to battle for the go-ahead goal throughout the remainder of regulation. Norwich generated six shots in the second half, while goalkeeper Victor Kalorin (Raleigh, N.C.) helped keep the Cadets within striking distance with a series of important saves. Neither team could find the decisive goal before the final whistle, sending the quarterfinal contest into overtime.
The two 10-minute overtime periods featured continued defensive intensity, with neither side able to break the deadlock. Norwich came close to taking the lead in the first overtime when Tavis Wallace (Bedford, N.H.) struck the post, but the score remained tied at 1-1 after 110 minutes of play.
With a trip to the GNAC Semifinals on the line, the quarterfinal was decided by penalty kicks. Norwich converted its first six attempts, with successful penalties from Miles Bergeson (Charlotte, Vt.), Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain), Daniel Hennessey (Dubai, U.A.E.), Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.), and Alessandro D'Arena (Berlin, Conn.).
After both teams missed their seventh attempts, Norwich had an opportunity to clinch the victory following another Albertus Magnus miss. Alejandro Pena (Annapolis, Md.) stepped up and converted his penalty, sealing the Cadets' 7-6 shootout victory and advancing Norwich to the GNAC Semifinals for the second straight year.
Kalorin played a critical role throughout the contest, recording seven saves over 110 minutes in goal. Norwich finished with 12 shots, putting nine on target, while the Cadets' defensive effort held Albertus Magnus to one goal despite the hosts recording 17 total shots.
The victory extends Norwich's postseason run and positions the Cadets for another opportunity to compete for the GNAC Championship as they advance to the conference semifinals for the second consecutive season.
