Men's Soccer: Cadets Battle to Draw at USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Norwich University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at USJ Soccer Field, using a second-half equalizer to secure a point on the road.

The Cadets continued their strong stretch of conference play with a competitive performance against the Blue Jays, responding after conceding an early goal and creating opportunities throughout the contest. Norwich remained within striking distance heading into the second half before finding the equalizer late in regulation to earn the draw.

Saint Joseph opened the scoring in the 11th minute to give the Blue Jays an early 1-0 advantage. Norwich worked to find an answer following the opening goal, looking to build possession and generate opportunities in the attacking third.

The Cadets created chances before the halftime break, including a header from freshman John Clark (Marion, Mass.) that forced a save from Saint Joseph goalkeeper Andres Diosa. Norwich continued to search for openings against the Blue Jays' defense, but the hosts carried their one-goal lead into the intermission.

Norwich returned from halftime looking to even the score, continuing to press for an equalizer while working to limit Saint Joseph's opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Victor Kalorin (Raleigh, N.C.) helped keep the Cadets in the contest with two second-half saves, providing an important presence in net as Norwich worked to get back on level terms.

The Cadets' persistence paid off in the 76th minute, when Norwich broke through to tie the match at 1-1. Junior Harry Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) found the back of the net off a setup from freshman Jacob Paro (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and junior Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who created the chance off of a clever flick, bringing Norwich even with the Blue Jays late in regulation.

With the score level, both sides looked to find a decisive goal during the closing stages. Norwich continued to compete for attacking opportunities while maintaining its defensive shape, ultimately holding on to secure the road draw after battling back from the first-half deficit.

Norwich finished with 13 shots, while Saint Joseph recorded 16. The Blue Jays held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks, as both teams worked to create scoring chances throughout the afternoon.

The draw moves the Cadets to 7-4-3 overall and 4-3-2 in GNAC play as they continue their conference schedule. Norwich will look to build on the result when it returns to Northfield for its next matchup against Regis College.
