WESTON, Mass. – The Norwich University women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Regis College Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Regis Stadium.
The Cadets moved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in GNAC play following the setback, finishing the evening with 13 total shots and six attempts on frame. Norwich also earned two corner kicks while holding Regis to six shots on goal.
Norwich came out aggressively in the opening half, creating several opportunities in the attacking third during the first 45 minutes. Sophie Guarriello (Barre, Vt.) recorded multiple attempts during the opening half, including a blocked shot in the 31st minute, while Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.) tested the Regis goalkeeper twice.
Briggs continued to create opportunities throughout the contest, finishing with three shots, including two on target. The junior has remained one of Norwich's primary offensive threats throughout the season and entered Wednesday's contest with 17 shots and 11 shots on goal through the team's first seven matches.
Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) also generated opportunities early, recording a pair of shots during the opening minutes as Norwich looked to establish its attack. Magoon entered the contest leading the Cadets with 21 shots on the season and nine shots on goal.
Norwich goalkeeper Sophie Olivo (Sanford, Maine) helped keep the Cadets within striking distance throughout the opening half, recording two saves before halftime. Olivo finished the match with three saves in the full 90 minutes.
The Cadets continued to push offensively after halftime. Norwich earned a corner in the 51st minute before Guarriello and Heidi Smith (Sammamish, Wash.) each put shots on target during the next eight minutes.
Norwich continued to generate chances as the second half progressed, with Jasmine Hackman (Clear Brook, Va.) forcing a save in the 68th minute. The Cadets continued to battle through the final 20 minutes, with Melanie Winters (Montpelier, Vt.) and Emma Zielezienski (Springfield, Va.) each with dangerous opportunities late in the match.
Norwich's final opportunities came during the closing minutes, as Lily Briggs forced a save in the 84th minute before Guarriello tested the goalkeeper again in the 87th minute. But it wouldn't be enough to swing the 3-0 result in their favor.
Despite the final result, the Cadets continued to create offensive opportunities throughout the match, putting six of their 13 shots on target. Norwich will look to return to the win column when it returns home for another GNAC contest this weekend.
The Cadets host Albertus Magnus this weekend in their next conference matchup.
