NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich women's ice hockey earned two Little East Conference (LEC) weekly awards as first-year standouts
Geena Cookinham (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) and
Maggie Hunter (Royal Oak, Mich.) were recognized following their performances at the East-West Classic.
Cookinham was named LEC Player of the Week after serving as the offensive sparkplug for the Cadets, totaling three points and earning East-West Classic MVP honors. The rookie forward opened the scoring against No. 13 Elmira by driving hard to the net and burying a rebound before singlehandedly forcing a turnover and breaking in alone for her second goal of the contest — the eventual game-winner. The honor marks Cookinham's second weekly award of the season, having previously earned LEC Rookie of the Week recognition on Nov. 24.
Hunter garnered LEC Rookie of the Week accolades after a sensational two-way performance that landed her on the All-Tournament Team. The first-year skater tallied an assist and scored the game-winning goal in a victory over Oswego while helping Norwich limit its opposition to a combined four goals over the tournament. Hunter finished the weekend with a +5 rating, earning the first weekly award of her collegiate career.
The Cadets will look to carry the momentum forward as LEC play resumes with a weekend road series in Rutland against Vermont State Castleton.
