Men's Basketball: Cadets' blistering offense dooms Plymouth State in non-conference rout

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Norwich University men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak in resounding fashion on Saturday afternoon, dominating Plymouth State University in an 82-50 non-conference victory inside Foley Gymnasium.

Four Cadets finished in double figures, led by Charles Nogard (Arlington, Mass.) with 14 points and four steals in just 17 minutes of action.  Michel Ndayishimiye (Colchester, Vt.) added a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Mike Johnson-Correia (Mattapan, Mass.) connected on three triples en route to 13 points.  Riley Severy (Barre, Vt.) rounded out the group, going a perfect 5-5 from the floor for 12 points in 13 minutes off the bench.

Ndayishimiye opened the scoring with a three-pointer off a Nogard assist, which the Panthers immediately matched.  A pair of free-throws from Nogard gave Norwich the lead back, but Plymouth State briefly pulled ahead with a second long-range make.  From there, the Cadets took control for good, using a quick 5-0 burst to move in front.  Though a Panther steal-and-score trimmed the margin to 10-8, Norwich began to pull away for good.

Leading 14-11 at the 14-minute mark, Norwich erupted for a 22-7 run over the next 13 minutes to blow the game open.  A 6-0 spurt to close the run, fueled by buckets from Joe Joe DuBrul (Shelburne, Vt.), Johnson-Correia, and Jordan Ricketts (Stratford, Conn.) pushed the lead to 36-18 before a late Plymouth State triple trimmed the halftime margin to 36-21.

The Cadets came out firing again to open the second half, as Johnson-Correia drilled a three to spark a 10-0 run that included eight points from the junior.  Mohammed Kanneh (South Burlington, Vt.) chipped in a layup during the stretch as the lead ballooned to 46-21.

Plymouth State briefly cut the deficit to 22 on two occasions, but Norwich quickly reasserted control.  A Severy layup off a dish from Noah Hutchinson (Montclair, N.J.) gave the Cadets a 30-point edge with 10:51 to play.  The margin grew to as much as 35 after a triple by Quinn Twombly (Glastonbury, Conn.), who tallied five points in just four minutes.  Nate McNeff (Stratham, N.H.) capped the Cadets' scoring with a late jumper as Norwich rolled to its most lopsided win of the season.

Norwich's offense was electric, shooting a season-best 60.8% (31-51) from the floor, their highest mark since a 61.8% clip against Vermont State University Randolph on Dec. 3, 2024.  The Cadets also shot 40.9% from beyond the arc and 73.3% from the free-throw line.

The defense was just as dominant, limiting Plymouth State to 29.5% shooting overall and 28.0% from three-point range.  Norwich controlled nearly every statistical category, including rebounds (42-24), points off turnovers (13-6), bench points (30-16), points in the paint (40-14), and fast break points (15-2).

The Cadets will look to keep the momentum rolling in their final non-conference game of the regular season, hosting Vermont State University Randolph on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6:00 p.m.  Norwich then opens Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 5:00 p.m. against Dean College in Andrews Hall.
