COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.- The Norwich Women's Wrestling squad turned in a strong all-around effort Saturday at the Will Abele Men's and Women's Invitational, hosted by Ursinus College, finishing 10th out of 19 teams while collecting multiple wins across the championship and consolation brackets.
Norwich opened the tournament with momentum in the lighter weights. At 117 pounds,
Addisyn Herdic (Canterbury, Conn.) was sharp throughout the day, earning a 10-0 victory in the round of 16 over Fenna Clover van der Velden (NEC) before advancing to the quarterfinals. Herdic added additional mat time in the consolation rounds as the Cadets pushed several wrestlers deep into their brackets.
At 124 pounds,
Gianna Silva (Monroe, Conn.) posted one of the team's most notable wins of the day, edging Casella of Western New England, 10-9, in the round of 16 to move on to the quarterfinals. Silva also picked up a consolation victory earlier in the tournament, adding valuable team points.
The Cadets continued their success at 145 pounds, led by
Nalani Portela-Bailey (Cibolo, Texas), who recorded multiple wins. Portela-Bailey earned victories in both the round of 16 and the consolation rounds, including an 8-2 decision over Stultz (CC) to remain alive late into the bracket.
At 160 pounds,
Ay'Seante Ross (Wilmington, N.C.) delivered a strong showing, advancing with victories in the early rounds and reaching the quarterfinals after securing a 4-2 decision over Savory (NJCU). Ross added additional points for Norwich with her performance across multiple bouts.
Additional Cadets gained valuable experience against a deep field, including
Charlii Carbajal Sanchez (Broomfield, Colo.) at 138 pounds and
Madison Stroud (Naples, Fla.) at 160, each facing nationally competitive opponents. The tournament also featured multiple consolation matches that helped Norwich climb the team standings.
Competing against a large and talented field, Norwich's depth across several weight classes proved critical in securing a top-10 team finish. The Cadets will now return to their home confines for a tri-meet with Maine Maritime and Felician at 11:00 a.m. on Jan. 31.
