Women's Ice Hockey: Cadets Ground Owls with Fourth Straight Shutout

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The eighth-ranked Norwich  Women's Ice Hockey team continued its dominant run Saturday afternoon, earning its fourth straight shutout with a 4–0 victory over Keene State to complete a weekend sweep at Kreitzberg Arena. Stellar special teams play and another composed performance in goal powered the Cadets as they closed the series without allowing a goal.

The afternoon also featured the program's Cadets Fight Cancer game, with puck drop performed by Karin Parkhurst '96, head coach of Norwich Women's Volleyball. The Cadets honored those who fought throughout the opening period, setting the stage for an inspired effort on the ice.

Norwich picked up right where it left off from Friday night, immediately putting pressure on Keene State goaltender Ai Chung. The Cadets controlled possession early, cycling through the offensive zone and forcing Chung to make multiple saves to keep the Owls level.

Momentum briefly threatened to shift when Keene State earned a power play seven-and-a-half minutes into the first period, but Payton Sutherland (Brighton, Colo.) came up with several key stops to deny the Owls. That stand opened the door for Norwich to strike first, doing so in dramatic fashion.

As Keene State attempted to transition through the neutral zone, Madalyn Liles (Arlington, Texas) poked the puck free and sent Marja Linzbichler (Graz, Austria) in alone on a breakaway. Linzbichler made no mistake, finishing cleanly to give Norwich a 1–0 lead and mark the Cadets' fourth short-handed goal of the season.

Norwich continued to press the attack and doubled its lead late in the opening frame. With four-and-a-half minutes remaining, Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) collected the puck behind the net and centered it in front to Madison Anderson (Green Bay, Wis.). Chung made the initial stop, but Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) followed the play and jammed home the rebound to make it 2–0. Norwich carried the two-goal cushion into the intermission while holding a commanding 21–7 advantage in shots.

The second period opened with both teams trading power-play opportunities, but it was the Cadets who capitalized. Dani Ammons (Centennial, Colo.) kept the puck alive at the left point and slid it over to Ellin Rees (Cardiff, Wales, U.K.). Chung turned aside Rees's first attempt, but Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) was waiting at the doorstep to bury the rebound and extend the lead to 3–0.

Norwich returned to the man advantage soon after. While the Cadets were unable to score on the power play, the sustained pressure kept the momentum firmly on their side and quickly led to the fourth goal of the afternoon.

Alex Leslie (Irishtown, N.B.) forced a turnover in the neutral zone and jump-started the rush the other way, sending the puck ahead to Ricker. Chung denied Ricker's attempt, but Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) followed the play and tucked home the rebound to push the lead to 4–0.

To their credit, Chung and the Keene State penalty-killing unit weathered a prolonged Norwich push late in the period to prevent further damage, keeping the scoreline intact heading into the third.

Keene State looked for a breakthrough in the final frame, generating several quality chances, but Sutherland remained locked in. The junior netminder tracked pucks cleanly, handled traffic with confidence, and calmly turned aside every opportunity that came her way.

Norwich's defensive structure and disciplined play limited second chances. They ensured the Owls were unable to mount sustained pressure, allowing the Cadets to preserve the four-goal advantage through the final horn. Sutherland finished with her third shutout of the season, anchoring Norwich's fourth consecutive clean sheet.

With the win, Norwich capped a perfect weekend against Keene State and continued its impressive stretch of play, combining elite special teams with stout defense and balanced scoring throughout the lineup.

"It was another solid performance from our group today," said Head Coach Justin Simpson. "We played a complete game. We have tomorrow off, then we will begin our preparation on Monday for our game against Amherst on Wednesday."

The Cadets will now turn their attention to the road for their final non-conference contest of the season, traveling to face the second-ranked Mammoths on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 6:00 p.m.
