KINGSTON, R.I. - The Norwich University women's rugby team returned to the road in emphatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, storming past the University of Rhode Island, 73-5, at the URI Rugby Pitch.
It marked the first 15s meeting between the two programs in nearly 13 years. Norwich last faced the Rams on Nov. 10, 2012, when the Cadets earned a 112-0 win in Northfield.
Carlyan Vigbedor (Centreville, Va.) led the offensive charge with six tries, while classmate
Alyssa Gioia (Stamford, Conn.) added four tries of her own in another standout outing.Â
Taina Negron (Melbourne, Fla.),
Leslie Malin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and
Ava Smith (North Falmouth, Mass.) each contributed one try apiece, rounding out a relentless attacking display from the Cadets.Â
Octavia Crawford (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) added four successful conversion kicks to finish off the Norwich scoring.
Norwich controlled the match from the outset, generating consistent forward momentum and capitalizing on its ability to finish opportunities in space. The Cadets remained sharp throughout the contest, showing continued cohesion in their ball movement and defensive shape.
With the victory, Norwich continues its run of dominant results after a 41-25 win over the University of Vermont during last Saturday's Homecoming Weekend matchup.
The Cadets will take to Sabine Field on Friday, Oct. 10, hosting the United States Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 p.m. and celebrating the team's Senior Day. The Cadets will remain home the following Saturday, Oct. 18, to face the University of Maine.
