Women's Rugby: Cadets Claim Northeast Conference Title in 55-19 Route

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's rugby team delivered a dominant performance at the Dog River Pitch on Saturday afternoon, rolling past Roger Williams University by a 55-19 final on Oct. 31. The Cadets showcased their offensive firepower and veteran leadership throughout the contest, putting together one of their strongest performances of the fall as they prepare for regional postseason play.

Norwich's attack was led by sophomore fullback Morgan Zelenak (Grove City, Ohio), who crossed the try line five times to power the Cadets' scoring effort in one of the most prolific games of her young career at Norwich. Senior wing Taina Negron (Melbourne, Fla.) added two tries, while senior flyhalf Madeline Ortiz (Lancaster, Calif.) and senior eight-person Kyleigh Beeby (Oklahoma City, Okla.) each found the try zone once. Gabrielle Virtue (Cumberland, R.I.) contributed five successful conversions.

The Cadets established control through a balanced attack, combining strong ball movement and effective execution to keep pressure on the Roger Williams defense. Norwich's ability to create scoring opportunities across the pitch proved pivotal in building its commanding margin.

The performance also highlighted the impact of Norwich's senior class, whose composure and experience helped drive the team throughout the match. Ortiz's breakaway try and Beeby's powerful charge through the Roger Williams defense stood out as memorable moments in the Cadets' convincing victory.

Head coach Baylee Annis praised the team's preparation and execution following the win.

"We have been working all season for this match up. The team outdid themselves this weekend against a powerhouse program. We were firing on all cylinders and I must applaud our seniors for the cohesion and confidence they brought to the pitch. Senior flyhalf Maddy Ortiz's breakaway try and senior 8 Kyleigh Beeby's charging dive through Roger Williams' defense were ones to remember. We are well positioned for post-season with regional playoffs coming up over November 13-15, 2026."

With the regular-season matchup behind them, the Cadets will turn their attention toward the upcoming regional playoffs, scheduled for Nov. 13-15. Norwich will look to carry Saturday's momentum into the postseason as it continues its pursuit of another successful fall campaign.
