CASTLETON, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team capped off their regular season on a high note Wednesday afternoon, rallying from an early deficit to secure a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Vermont State University Castleton at the Castleton Tennis Courts.
After dropping two out of three doubles matches to open the day, the Cadets roared back with four wins in singles play to edge past the Spartans and sweep the season series. The win marks Norwich's first at VTSU Castleton since Mar. 31, 2021, and its second triumph over the Spartans this season following an 8-1 decision at home on Mar. 18.
Norwich's lone doubles victory came at the top flight, where
Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) and
Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) earned an 8-4 win over VTSU Castleton's Miki Almirall and Valero Echegoyen. The Spartans responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, as Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard outlasted
Keagan Bakke (Gun Barrel City, Texas) and
Gabe Wettig (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), 8-5, and the tandem of Trevor Castino and Dylan Shiland defeated
Thomas Riddick (Clayton, N.C.) and
Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.), 8-5.
The Cadets flipped the script in singles with a determined display across the ladder. Bakke battled through a tough three-setter at the top spot, downing Almirall, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Bayly-Henshaw added another three-set win at No. 2, pulling away from Ciufo in the decider, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
Redmond continued his stellar stretch with a straight-set victory at No. 3 over Maynard, 6-2, 6-2, while Hartigan sealed the team win at No. 6, holding off Shiland in a pair of tight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
With the result, Norwich closes out the regular season at 9-3 overall and 4-1 in conference action, surpassing the 2014 and 2019 squads for the most regular-season wins by a Cadet team in the past 15 years.
