Baseball: Late Rally Falls Short as Cadets Suffer Setback against Anna Maria

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Baseball team wrapped up the home portion of their schedule Tuesday afternoon when they played their penultimate Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest against Anna Maria, where the AMCATs would take home the victory.

Anna Maria jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the top of the first, with three of them coming on a three-run home run by cleanup hitter Jonathan Guardascione. The Cadets answered by scoring a run in the home half of the first with Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.) coming across on a passed ball.

The score remained unchanged until Anna Maria scored four more in the sixth to take control. Norwich answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning with a pinch-hit RBI triple by Michael Davide Jr. (Franklin, Mass.) to bring home Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) before Davide Jr. came home on another passed ball. The Cadets closed the gap further in the seventh with Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.) and Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) coming home on a dropped third strike, making it a three-run game.

The AMCATs answered with five runs combined in the eighth and ninth. Norwich mounted a rally to close the gap in the bottom of the ninth. John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) led off the inning with a double before eventually coming across on a wild pitch. In the same at bat, Davide Jr. plated Sabasteanski with a single. Two batters later, Maldonado drove home Hayes with an RBI single before Anna Maria recorded the final out to secure the win.

Davide Jr. led the way offensively after being subbed in, going 3-3 with a run and an RBI on his three-bagger. Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) also tallied multiple hits, going 2-5 with a double, while Sabasteanski and Hayes crossed the plate twice.

Norwich will now travel across the Green Mountain State when they visit Vermont State Castleton Thursday afternoon April 24 at 4 PM.
