HOLYOKE, Mass.- The Norwich Baseball team hit the road once again Tuesday when they travelled to Elms to play as the designated home team due to unplayable field conditions to continue Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
The Blazers got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the second, but the Cadets responded in the third to cut the deficit. After Eli Oliver (East Montpelier, Vt.) worked his way around the bases after a leadoff single, Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) brought him home with an RBI single to right center to put Norwich on the board.
Elms regained their three-run advantage in the fourth, and stretched it to six runs in the fifth before the Cadets responded. Franus reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third by virtue of a steal of second and a wild pitch before John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) hit a ball over the centerfielder's head to bring him home with an RBI double.
In the sixth, Norwich closed the gap to three by capitalizing on several Blazer miscues. Three consecutive errors by Elms loaded the bases with one out, one of which involved Dillan Garza (San Antonio, Texas) coming home on a missed pickoff attempt, for Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.). Maldonado brought Oliver home with a sacrifice fly to left, making it a three-run game. However, Elms answered with a seven-run seventh inning to bring the game to an early conclusion. Garza went 2-3 on the day, while Oliver crossed the plate twice, while Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) also notched a two-bagger.
The Cadets will have a quick turnaround. They will host an intrastate clash with Vermont State Lyndon on April 2 at 3 p.m.
