NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team fell in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Championship game 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, in the final title game in the conference's history.
The Soaring Eagles held a decided territorial advantage off the puck drop, putting
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) to the test early and often. Late in the period, the Cadets had chances towards Elmira netminder Sara Sevcikova including a breakaway for
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) that was stopped, and a chance for
Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) that caught the post. At the other end, Clark made several more saves to keep the game scoreless with Elmira holding a 10-3 edge in shots.
Elmira continued to hold the momentum to open the second period and would eventually break the ice. On a rush chance, Erika Goleniak took a shot that Clark stopped, but the rebound glanced off the body of Bri Conger as she crashed the net to put the Soaring Eagles ahead. Minutes later, Norwich went to their first powerplay, but Sevcikova preserved the lead making four stops. Clark kept the game within striking distance as the Cadets killed off a penalty before the frame expired.
Facing a deficit, the Cadets took over the territorial advantage early in the third, but Sevcikova preserved the lead for Elmira. The two teams skated four aside for an extended period but neither had quality chances. In the final minutes, after a Norwich timeout, the Soaring Eagles preserved the win by keeping the Cadets in their defensive end.
For All-Tournament team honors, forwards
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) and
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) earned recognition for their performance in the semifinals against William Smith. Clark also received recognition for her 26-save performance in the title game.
In their final season in the NEHC, the Cadets finish the season with a record of 19-8-0 winning their second straight regular season title.
