NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's rugby team is heading to Bermuda this weekend to compete in the Bermuda International 7s Tournament, held at the National Sports Centre North Field in Devonshire, Bermuda, from Friday, Mar. 14 through Saturday, Mar. 15.
This prestigious event will feature top collegiate and under-23 club teams from across the United States and Bermuda, providing a highly competitive preseason test for the Cadets as they prepare for the spring sevens season.
Building on a tradition established in 2016, the Bermuda International 7s has become a key event for teams looking to gain valuable early-season competition experience. Norwich has been a strong contender in past tournaments, placing 10th in 2016, ninth in 2017, winning the championship in 2019, and finishing fourth in 2024. The Cadets will look to build on last year's success as they take on a talented field that includes teams from Harvard University, University of Maryland, Columbia University, Boston RFC U23, Marist University, and more.
Head Coach
Bob Weggler emphasized the importance of the tournament for Norwich's sevens development, saying, "Bermuda 7s is our preseason 7s. It is hard for us to get quality outside sevens training with Vermont weather. The boys are looking forward to getting a run and developing our sevens play."
Norwich will compete in Pool B alongside Bermuda, Stony Brook, and Maryland Black. The Cadets open play on Friday night at 5:12 p.m. EDT against Maryland Black, followed by matches against Stony Brook at 6:39 p.m. EDT and Bermuda at 8:24 p.m. EDT. Saturday's matches will begin at 12:00 p.m., with knockout rounds determined by Friday's results.
With a history of producing exciting and competitive rugby, the Bermuda International 7s has seen thrilling finals in recent years, including the Saratoga Jockeys' dramatic 17-14 victory over Dartmouth College in 2024 and Kutztown University's championship win over Brown University in 2023. This year's tournament is shaping up to be another high-intensity showdown, as teams battle for the coveted title.
